2012 Festival Film
Brainlove Festival, the annual small festival of lo-fi, alt-pop, tweemo, schmindie, grindstep and funwave, is back for it's sixth edition this May 11th, once again within the careworn confines of legendary alternative music hub The Brixton Windmill.
The festival marks the tenth anniversary of Brainlove Records, and has previously seen performances for bands like Meursault, Fuck Buttons, Gay Against You, The Research, Bearsuit, Cats In Paris, The Bear Driver, PATTERNS, Team Brick, Kid Carpet, Agoskodo Teliverek and many more. The label has released many of these bands over its ten year existence, as well as music by PLANNINGTOROCK, Napoleon IIIrd, Tim Ten Yen, Bishi, and many others.
This year, BRNLVFSTVL is headlined by Fairhorns (pictured above, also known as MX LX, a member of BEAK> and, formerly, as Team Brick). From overseas come Finnish shoegazers The New Tigers and Chicago-based experimental classical/pop/drone/electronica maestro Bastardgeist, who is joined on this vintage lineup by Brainlove's Napoleon IIIrd, emerging homegrown alt-pop star Tom Milsom, Brighton synth/drum power-duo AK/DK (as seen touring Europe last year with The Dandy Warhols) and Welsh indie-rock band Local Sports Team (which also features label mainstay Pagan Wanderer Lu).
Mat Riviere (pictured below) will perform a special full-band set in advance of his album "not even doom music", which is released May 13th on ltd edition vinyl. The vinyl is on order here and will be available for the first time on the day of the festival. Riviere also selected much of the outdoor stage lineup, which will feature DIY/indie-pop scene bands like Ides, The Nervy Betters and King of Cats.
Ned The Kid's Dylan, an 11-yr-old boy spotted charming all and sundry to his acoustic performance at the No Direction Home festival last year, will also perform, and there will be a lineup of new poets reading outside. There is, as always, a free barbecue for all-comers, and a Brainlove record stall.
