Munira was born and brought up in London and has lived here all her life. She and her husband Michael have both lived in Twickenham for six years, and married at St Stephen’s Church, East Twickenham, in 2007. Munira has also lived in Chessington.
An expert in health policy, Munira currently works in communications for a leading global healthcare company, having previously worked for charities such as Beating Bowel Cancer and Save the Children. She has a track record of campaigning on issues including child poverty in the UK, child trafficking and access to better health services.
After attending a state grammar school in North London, Munira studied French and German at Cambridge University, spending a year as an English assistant in two secondary schools in southern France. Following her graduation, Munira spent time volunteering in India at a home for children and women affected by HIV/AIDS, and travelling around northern India, before embarking on her career.
Munira served as a councillor for West Twickenham ward in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames between 2006 and 2010, during that time, Munira built a strong reputation locally as a tough and energetic campaigner, securing important road safety and road improvement schemes for her ward, tackling anti-social behaviour, as well as fighting planning applications from multinationals such as McDonalds. Munira also served on the Children’s Services and Finance & Strategy scrutiny committees.
Munira has campaigned against the third runway at Heathrow, for action on Feltham arenas and improvements to Hounslow town centre. She and activists within Feltham & Heston also provided support to Susan Kramer’s campaign in Richmond Park.
Munira continues to serve as a governor at Heathfield Junior School on the Richmond/Hounslow borough boundary, having being appointed in April 2007. In her limited spare time, Munira enjoys Bollywood dance classes, being an active member of St Stephen’s Church, cooking and spending time with family and friends.
