“First arriving in Hayes in 1961, my family along with hundreds like them came to Britain to make a better life for themselves and their children. Originally from Punjab, India, they came to the UK to ensure that my three sisters, brother and I got a chance to succeed in life.

Growing up in Southall during the ‘60s was tough, but my father, who worked as a Maintenance Worker for British Airways saved up enough to open a successful grocery shop with my mother. Having aspirations and working hard to achieve them were values that my family had at its core. We were always encouraged to our best.

I wanted to be a Doctor since I was a young boy, and through the support of my family I achieved my dream when in 1983 I graduated from Sheffield University Medical School. I knew from growing up in such a strong community that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping those who needed help. So I returned to London to begin my medical practice.

Since 1989 I have been a G.P. serving the people of Hanwell, and in 1994 I established my own practice. Through hard work and investment, our practice now provides healthcare to some 12,000 NHS patients in Hanwell and Southall. We’ve got plans to bring healthcare to even more people with our planned new medical centre on Lower Boston Road, Hanwell.

Having become successful in my profession, and having a family of my own, my experiences have thought me that our country works best when we provide opportunities for people to succeed. Through hard work and aspiration, me, my family and the community I grew up in have thrived.

We need to ensure that as a community, we look after those who need a helping hand to make their way and succeed in life. That’s why I want to continue my public service and stand for the Greater London Assembly. I want to ensure that we are truly providing the best possible healthcare and life opportunities to everyone, the kind that have got we where I am today.”
