Mitsuda: Tribute to Yasunori Mitsuda

Last week it was reported that a gaming company based in Manchester had digitally immortalised a terminally ill fan by creating a character in his likeness for a forthcoming title. Heartbreaking, life-affirming … this story ably demonstrates how seriously people take video games. Personally I steer clear of them, for much the same reason I avoid box sets and opioids: the fear of ‘not getting other stuff done’.

However, I’ve always loved video game soundtracks, which naturally have evolved in tandem with other aspects of game production. The genius men behind many of these pixelated sounds have been rightly fetishized by musicians. Composer/producer Julian Wass is such a fan of Yasunori Mitsuda – the man behind the music for titles such as Shadow Hearts and Chrono Trigger – he’s pulled a few optical fibres and put together a tribute album, featuring the likes of Ryan Hemsworth and KeyboardKid206 messing around with Mitsuda samples to create new tracks.

Mitsuda is available now as a free download, via Lefse Records.
