Beetling With Doodle Bugs

The Chris Beetles Gallery is staging a massive exhibition of drawings by the biggest names in illustration, from John Tenniel to Quentin Blake, Aubrey Beardsley to, personal hero, Ronald Searle. More than sixty artists are featured, Beetles has an extensive collection and the gallery is fairly large, covering two floors, so with any luck it won’t be one of those “a-scribble-the-great-artist-did-on-a-napkin bobbing in a sea of mediocre crap, but a reasonable selection from each. If ink were booze, I predict that place would be filled with the classiest of drunks, and I’d be stumbling into the street afterward, dripping black and singing about hatchmarks. Still might.
The Illustrators- The British Art of Illustration runs Nov 20-Jan 8, 2011 at the Chris Beetles Gallery, 8-10 Ryder Street. Catalogue can be viewed at chrisbeetles.com.Snipe Highlights
