Snipe’s Weekly Exhibition Guide: 25 April – 1 May

Luke Insect – “The Time & Space Machine”
ON
From the legendary pop of the 60 to sun-kissed Balearic drenched scene of the late 80s and early 90s, music has always influenced visual art. Particularly inspired by the psychedelic sounds and visuals of the 60s, artists Luke Insect, Leo Zero and David Little work under the collective of Golden Sun Movement. Currently on display at the Idea Generation Gallery, their inaugural exhibition ‘ON’ features a selection of works from their extensive design back-catalogue as well as collaborative site-specific works created to explore the gallery’s unique architecture. Until 8 May.
Drawing 2011 Biennial Fundraiser
Taking place at the Drawing Room in East London, this Biennial fundraiser features a whole host of exciting works from over 2000 emerging and established artists including Paula Rego, Mark Wallinger, Fabian Peake and Fiona Banner. The final silent auction will take place on 18 May but you can visit and place your bids or just enjoy the incredible drawings on display now. Until 18 May.
Philip Taaffe
Incorporating everything from botanical patterns to Islamic imagery, renowned New York artist Philip Taaffe’s latest psychedelic paintings are splashed with vibrant hues and a real sense of urgency. In his first ever solo exhibition in London you can see the unique combination of action painting, silk-screening and layering that has made his collage-esque work so beloved. Until 14 May.
Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2011
The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize finalists Thomas Demand, Roe Ethridge, Jim Goldberg, and Elad Lassry currently have their work on display at Ambika 3 and you can catch a range of talks with the nominees at The University of Westminster this week following the announcement of the winner tomorrow. My filmy film: Arthur
In this light-hearted remake of the 1981 film, Russell Brand takes on the taxing role of a flamboyant bachelor billionaire, Arthur, who is nanny-ed into unemployability by lifelong governess, Hobson (Helen Mirren). Arthur’s days spent cavorting around New York with his chauffer dressed as Batman and generally indulging in laddish pursuits are threatened when mummy (Geraldine James) delivers a crushing ultimatum: marry money hungry socialite Susan (Jennnifer Garner) and ensure the future of the family business or face a life of poverty. What seems like a solid business agreement is jeopardised via a chance encounter with a captivating writer from Queens, Naomi (Greta Gerwig), and Arthur must choose between his love of money and his love of a penniless enchantress whom his mother loathes.

Austra - The Beat & The Pulse (Vondelpark Remix)

We’re in danger of developing a substantial musical crush on Toronto’s Austra here at Snipe. This summery take on recent single Beat And The Pulse by Surrey producer Vondelpark twists the dramatic electro of the original into something all the more Lemon Jelly-esque. Best heard whilst horizontal.

Mae by Magic Mountain
Nice bit of blippy U.S. house this, from Harry Bornstein a.k.a. Magic Mountain (formerly Magick with a ‘k’). Information is pretty scarce – he’s based in New Mexico and signed to online magazine offshoot The Pop Manifesto. There should be an EP coming out soon according to Altered Zones.

Top 5 nonsense phrases that only exist on the internet
There are some phrases which have a life only in the rarefied ecosystem of the blogosphere. Here they are taken as read. But remove them from their special habitat and they reveal themselves to be utter bloggledegook. Here are my top five, complete with examples of how you never hear them being used in the real world.
It’s a feature not a bug
This descendant of programming forums is spreading like wildfire at the moment (eg this response to the Independent URL farrago of earlier this week). If someone used it in normal speech you’d probably punch them in the face.
“Don’t be annoyed about last night, honey. Throwing up after 5 pints is a feature with me, not a bug.”
Game changer
Political bloggers have a secret pact between themselves to invoke this phrase when discussing the most transient change in a party’s fortunes. Does anyone speak like this out loud?
“I used to love Ariel Pink, but when uncool people started liking him that was a real game changer for me.”
Absent any…
I really hate this one. Used by pompous people to show to everyone that they are reading the American political science bloggers who first started using it. It sounds so clunky, and if someone used it in speech I guarantee you’d ask them to repeat themselves.
“Absent any leftover takeaway in the fridge, I’ll have to get some lunch at KFC.”
Zero sum game
No one is exactly sure what this means except advanced mathematicians. This doesn’t stop everyone throwing it around online like confetti. Used verbally it could only provoke a half hour discussion as to what the hell you are talking about.
“We can either watch The Killing on BBC4 or that repeat of Undercover Princes on 3, but not both. The telly tonight is a zero sum game bro.”
Anything Latin
Sine qua non, something qua something, alea iacta est. Blogging is replacing medicine and the law as the professions most likely to require a Latin dictionary to understand. You never need to use Latin, you can always say it in English. So say it in English.
Is Gaz coming down the pub? Cos he’s the sine qua non of me going, I’m afraid.”
