We also asked them to rank cities in terms of economic activity, political power, quality of life, and knowledge and influence. London took the pole position in almost every category.”

Here are rich people’s top 10 cities.

The Truth about Stanley

A short film about a man, his stories and the boy who listened, directed by Lucy Tcherniak.

The film tells the story of an unlikely friendship between an old Congolese man and a young runaway, living rough on the streets. The Truth About Stanley is a story about friendship, loss, and the way in which we choose to deal with personal trauma. For Stanley, what he lacks in material possessions, he makes up for with his vivid imagination and an insatiable desire to tell stories.

What are we to make of Ken Livingstone's first Mayoral election broadcast?

First up – the promise to cut fares or resign by a nominated date (October 7th) is one of the few definite, measurable and significant promises anyone has made in the whole campaign. It has power and traction, and I think it’s effective here.

But what of the rest of the video?

A bunch of self-described “ordinary Londoners” moan about all manner of things that the Mayor can do absolutely nothing about – electricity bills, childcare, the NHS – and then beg Ken to win the election and save them all from the nasty Tories. For connoisseurs of Ken’s campaign, the elderly Jewish man in particular will raise a knowing smirk. Subtle this messaging ain’t.

The peroration that these “ordinary Londoners” concoct is a curious one.

“Come on Ken! London needs you…Win it for London Ken!”

That’s right, “ordinary Londoners”, Ken is doing YOU a favour by standing in this election. You’re quite right to be grateful to him for sacrificing himself in your service.

It sounds less like an appeal for votes and more like a candidate clapping himself on the back and expecting the electorate to join in.

It’s an interesting tactic, let’s see how it plays out.

UPDATE: Ken was so moved at this broadcast’s unveiling that he burst into tears, says The Standard’s Pippa Crerar. Remarkable.

London's biggest street art mural is cool. But don't pretend it's not commercial

There are two eye-catching logos in this picture. One is for London Underground.

Creative Review report on London’s largest mural, a just-finished 450 square metre art work adorning the Megaro hotel and Karpo restaurant opposite St Pancras station.

Remi/Rough, one of its creators, says this:

“When they [the parent company] were looking to rebrand their hotel and restaurant business last year, they saw that we had painted a hotel in Vancouver and their art direction agency, The Narrative, approached us and asked if we’d paint the building. We said yes, but made it clear that we wouldn’t paint any logos – because that’s completely against what we’re all about.”

Hang on. How are logos “completely against what you’re all about”? This is a commission to rebrand a hotel/restaurant. That’s great, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But to pretend that painting a logo on it would have been somehow offensive to artistic sensibility is a bit of a stretch.

Isn’t the whole mural one big 450 square metre logo?

It’s great for artists to get commissions. That’s not selling out, it’s earning a living. But to pretend it’s no logo? That’s just kidding yourself.

Siobhan Benita has received far more coverage than she deserves

Independent mayoral candidate Siobhan Benita has received remarkable coverage in this election.

So far she has been awarded numerous TV and radio appearances, positive press from the nationals, and has been the subject of not one but two major interviews with the Evening Standard.

But despite her enviable reception by the media, Benita has spent much of the campaign complaining about not getting enough coverage.

Barely a day goes by without Benita or her team attacking the broadcasters for unfairly ‘excluding’ her from this or that debate, or this or that story.

But the question Benita and her supporters have failed to answer is why they think she should be getting any significant coverage at all.

Benita has never won a single election before, not even on her local council. More importantly she has failed to provide any evidence of a grassroots support base.

Having celebrity backers is nice, but Richard Branson, Peter Jones and Gus O’Donnell only count as three votes.

What matters is how the rest of London votes, and today’s Comres poll puts her support at less than half of one per cent. Below the Greens, UKIP and even the BNP.

Rather than unfairly excluding her, I’d suggest that the media have actually given Benita far more coverage than she really deserves.

The best show on US telly will be shown here tonight - and no one will watch

The best show on US television right now is Community, a comedy about eight adults enrolled in a third-tier university. It’s subtle, slow-burning, meta, and self-aware and consistently under threat of cancellation.

Now, British broadcasters have always been unsure how to schedule the best US programmes, look at BBC scheduling of Mad Men at 11pm on BBC 4. (The worst —Two & A Half Men, Friends, The A Team are scheduled so they are impossible to miss.)

But , at 10:30 pm tonight on Sony TV, Community‘s scheduling really takes the piss. What in hell is Sony TV?

Sony TV, it seems, is a channel on Sky and Virgin owned by the Sony concern. It’s very name helps explains Sony’s current dire straights. How do the brainiacs run the channel expect people to google it?

If you can get Sky 157 or Virgin 193, give Community a try. If they get an sort of decent numbers, maybe they’ll finally bring in Parks & Recreation and Breaking Bad,
