Apocalypse Dreams by Tame Impala

Australian psych-lords Tame Impala take the early Pink Floyd-isms to the extreme on this, the first taster from their new album Lonerism, due in October on Modular Recordings (date TBC). For those who like to plan ahead, you can catch them at the Brixton Academy October 30.

Scraps - 1982

Here’s a nice wonky stagger of a song that sound like a bit like a White Town track made from a Casio keyboard demo, or a polished up version of über-obscure French no-fi pop girl Lispector. It’s by Scraps, about whom we know little more, other than that their “Secret Paradise” EP comes out in July on the promising Critical Heights label.

Tree Drum by Gatekeeper

Part ambient, part Casio rainforest psychedelia (look mum, I invented a new genre!), Tree Drum is taken from the New York duo’s forthcoming debut LP Exo, released July 17 on Hippos in Tanks (home to the equally otherworldly Grimes).

Pinemarten - I Can See

We’ve been getting email about Pinemarten for a while and not getting around to clicking on the links. The fact that it was presumed to be mumbly campfire folk music tells you we didn’t get to reading the press release either. But lo and behold, turns out it’s not folk, but rather down-tempo, pulsing electronic pop – when the plaintive vocals kick in, it sounds every bit like a contemporary update for the pristine Anglo-pop of The Pet Shop Boys.

And as a little bonus, here’s a youthful indie-pop love song from Young & Lost signings Being There, on which the singer sounds like he has a mouth full of Haribo worms throughout.

Why - Sod In The Seed

Today’s MPfree is from WHY?, the Portland-based trio led by poet-rapper Yoni Wolf. “Sod In The Seed” is the percussion-heavy title track from the forthcoming six-track EP, due out on August 13th via City Slang. WHY? play the Electric Ballroom on October 10th.

My Own Mind by Pale Seas

The beautifully atmospheric second single from the Southampton/London four-piece, due physically in September available now as a free download. For another free download, click here. A band growing in confidence by the day, with the songs and presence to match.

XXL - Disco Chrome

XXL is Xiu Xiu and Italian Michael Gira/Nurse With Wound collaborators Larsen. Together they’ve made an album of a predictably unpredictable nature. Disco Chrome, downloadable below, is a passage of odd-rock, with kraut and industrial influence, bursts of discordancy and driving rhythm; the rest of the album, entitled “Düde”, sees everything from surreal, hypnotic minimalism to grinding, circular riffs. It’s July release is preempted by a headline show at Cafe Oto this Friday.

Nunca by Trails and Ways

Trails and Ways are one of our new favourite bands here at Snipe. The California four-piece have just dropped a video for recent single Nunca, inspired by a trip to Sao Paolo. Download the track below and head to their Bandcamp for more free goodies.

Keel Her - Prize Catch

Every sane indie person is quite rationally crushing out on Keel Her right now. Each skewed-up ball of lo-fi guitar-pop to appear on her Soundcloud belies a knack for tousled, blushing earworms masked beneath 4-track hiss and distortion. See her play for free, tonight at the Old Blue Last, to celebrate signing to Critical Heights. Onstage 10.30pm.

Shiny Darkly - He's Suicidal

The kind of reverb-drenched, sleazy rock ‘n’ roll ear battering we’ve come to expect from Copenhagen’s Crunchy Frog Records, home to Snipe favourites Powersolo and Snake and Jet’s Amazing Bullit Band. Snipe music editor John Rogers describes He’s Suicidal as his joint ‘favourite single of the year’, along with Chin by Sleep Party People – he’s obviously never heard Young by Tulisa. Shiny Darkly’s debut EP is out now: you can get your hands on it here. Great name for a band btw.
