One in ten Londoners unemployed

Almost one in ten Londoners are now unemployed, new government figures have revealed.

Unemployment in the capital has risen 0.4 per cent over the course of the past year to 9.4%.

London is now the third highest region in the UK for unemployment with an estimated 392,000 people out of work.

The overall level of youth unemployment across the UK is also now at its highest rate for a decade.

The news follows a period of negative growth in the UK economy and will increase fears of worse economic times ahead.

The sheer scale of the problem was highlighted this week as Mayor Boris Johnson announced that he would be providing work placements for “up to 60 ex-offenders” on the Olympic Park.
