The Guardian riots study is in. "Fuck the police" is the gist of it

Today The Guardian goes big on its co-study of the riots with LSE. They spoke to 270 rioters. It’s an impressive piece of work. Points to note:

Lots of rioters say it was about the police. There’s plenty of self-serving bollocks quoted in this report, which lets the rioters speak for themselves. Don’t forget, while reading it, that in some cases they’re justifying smashing up corner shops. But clear too the the police are seen as the enemy. And that stop and search contributes to this.

There’s an excellent pdf with a breakdown of the results. Of note: 79% of rioters were male, and 51% were under 21.

From the same pdf, 74% rioters named social media as a contributing cause to their actions, while only 32% named gangs as a cause. This probably means we should BAN SOCIAL MEDIA?!?

This being The Guardian there’s some nonsense up there as well. The riot commute data visualisation is very silly. “Riot commute”? Really?

The London Underground Film Festival celebrates opening night with some of the best underground film, music, and performance art Europe has to offer, compered by Princess Julia.

GERTRUD STEIN
Synthpop chanteuse Gertrud Stein will be gracing our stage, accompanied by her virtual backing dancers.

SOFT RIOT
Soft Riot is JJD of Savage Furs: one person with a lot of antiquated equipment and lighting performing sinister, minimalist electronic “pop” songs equally influenced from dystopian film, soundtracks and various types of “wave” music. A forthcoming EP, “Another Drone In Your Head”, will be released on the US label Tundra Dubs in early 2012.

PARDON MY EARLY EXIT; HOPE YOU SURVIVE!
A rare performance by the gender bender-sound-art-project – pardon my early exit; hope you survive! , an open multimedia platform to experiment with sound, vision, touch, smell, taste, and the six and SevEn senses, an obsessive/compulsive collector interested in what others reject or can’t find use for, to give it a new life, a new name and a different meaning. Loud or quiet, clean or distorted, no preconceptions, restraint is a tool to reach further, sink deeper, spread out wider and shrink. For this special occasion expect or unexpect deep sea creatures and aliens … as above, so below!

EMERGENT BEHAVIOUR
Performance art duo Emergent Behaviour will be presenting a new piece devised especially for the London Underground Film Festival.

MILKandLEAD
Theatre and body art performer MILKandLEAD will be performing “The Red Virgin Mary”, exploring the sacred and profane in a re-reading of the traditional self-immolation rituals performed by sacristans in some southern Italian villages.

Plus DJs:

HEIDI HEELZ
Creator of Dice Club and erstwhile bass player in The Guillotines, Heidi is now on a mission to instigate a glam rock resurgence. It is going quite well. Catch her at GlamRacket every first Saturday of the month at The Buffalo Bar or at her residencies at Aces & Eights, The Lexington and The Retro Bar. And while you’re at it check out her Roxy and Eno tribute band “Proxy Music” (next gigs: Dec 20th at The Buffalo Bar and Dec 31st at The 100 Club).

BRAVE EXHIBITIONS
Brave Exhibitions is cold/minimal/no(w)-wave muzak club renowned for the avante-garde and the “unexpected”. Established in the notorious darker corners of Shoreditch, London, and now expanded to Berlin – Brave is a rookery for precocious bands, performance artists, and DJ’s that will compel and disturb you.

NEVER COME BACK
Founded by Emily Rose England and Alison Lewis, Never Come Back is London’s newest experimental dance party. The club featuring some of the most exciting performers to grace the scene and spinning classic and new minimal wave, NDW, coldwave, queerwave, post-punk, synth pop, new beat and old EBM.

PROJECTIONS:
Carmen Burguess is an Argentinian artist who works with several techniques, including collage, video, installation, drawing, and fotonovel. Her graphic work has been published around the world and used for novels and magazine covers. She illustrated writers such as H.P Lovecraft. Based in Berlin since 2008, Carmen is half of the band Mueran Humanos.

MOMENTO MORI
The Opening Night Party will also be the launch of an exhibition of new works by Emily Rose England, called “Momento Mori”.

Nick Griffin has a Hitler moustache cat

British National Party MEP Nick Griffin has released a creepy little Christmas video wherein Griffin relates the story of Jesus.

But the video shows more than Griffin’s atrocious story-telling skills – it shows that he has a Hitler Moustache cat. One that seems super-glued to his leg.

Boris Johnson announces fourth year of above inflation fare rises

Many fares in London will rise by 2% above inflation this January, despite a government cap announced this week.

Average fare rises will be set at just under RPI +1%, but many fares will rise by 7.5% and some by even 8% next year.

Most child Pay As You Go rail fares will rise by 7.7% whilst a single Oyster Pay As You Go adult tube fare zones 1-2 will rise by 8% to £2.70.

TfL estimate that the rises will net them an extra £172 million worth of revenue next year.

Following the grant announced this week by George Osborne, many other fares will rise below inflation.

Bus and tram fares will also rise by much less than previous years, with a single Pay As You Go fare rising by just 5p.

However, this will still leave single bus and tram Oyster fares 50% more expensive than they were in 2008.

Fare rises are also expected to go back up to RPI+ 2% after the Mayoral election if Boris Johnson wins.

This is despite a promise from Boris not to hold down fares before an election and then “whack them up cynically thereafter.”

Announcing his fare rises today Boris said that:

“Every penny of this cash injection will go towards keeping fares as low as possible. That is very good news in the current economic climate and even better the unprecedented level of investment to improve London’s transport network will continue unabated.”

Labour’s Mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone said today that if elected next year he will cut fares.

“Rising fares under Boris Johnson or a fares cut with my Fare Deal give Londoners a very clear choice. Fares are rising when they should be cut, and as the Tory mayor has once again failed to cut them today, I will set out next week further details of how I will cut them instead”

You can read the full table of fare rises here.

Christmas Tall Stories

Our tip-for-2012 Tall Stories, bigged up in the current issue of the paper as one of London’s best new bands, dust off their riotous, punky indie-rock for a clutch of LDN gigs over the next fortnight. For the Good Mixer they take over the legendary (tiny) Britpop pub, who are loading in a PA and stacking up the pool tables for a Saturday night party gig that can only end in some form of drunken rioting.
