Jobs: What's Hackney doing that Newham isn't?

London’s unemployment rate has hit 10%, after rounding, according to figures released this morning by the ONS. Londonlovesbusiness delved behind the upward trend last month:

The high level of unemployment in London is driven to a significant extent by specific areas, such as Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackney,” explains Dr Paul Sissons, a research fellow at the Institute of Unemployment Studies. “There are certain groups in the UK and London population who are disproportionately out of work – parents with low qualifications, ethnic minorities – and those groups are particularly concentrated in these boroughs.”

But a look at the figures doesn’t quite back this up, at least where Hackney is concerned. The latest borough by borough breakdown I can get hold of takes us up to March this year. Here’s how it looks for two of the supposedly poorer boroughs, Newham and Hackney.

Online Graphing

Two things to say: firstly that Newham’s employment rate of 53.7% is shocking. That it might be even lower were it not a recipient of so much Olympic cash is a dismal thought.

Secondly, Hackney’s reputation is in need of adjustment. These figures show it to have an employment rate higher than Westminster, Islington, Southwark, and Hammersmith and Fulham, among others. So, some questions. Is this gentrification in action? Is there an underclass missing out on the relative prosperity the borough is currently enjoying (viz riots)? Or is it time to take Hackney off the watch list and focus some of the media and political attention elsewhere?

Boils: they erupt on unhealthy skin

Mayor Johnson agrees with a heckler’s analogy for the Occupy LSX protesters. Boils are caused by bacterial infection of the hair follicles. They are particularly common in both the obese and the malnourished. [METAPHOR ALERT] When a society has large concentrations of both, you might say they are inevitable.

Reviewed: I went to the Hackney Death Café

Let’s get the most important half of the review in first: the cake at the death café is delicious.

Now for the death.

City AM - chronicle of the apocalypse

Do you ever pick up a Metro on the way to work and flick impatiently to the showbusiness pages, only to fling it disgustedly to the floor as you realise that you’ve actually picked up City AM and you’re reading an interview with an iron futures trader?

This happened to me this morning. But then I got bored, picked up the paper and gave it a whirl. Big mistake. Here are a few of the headlines.

Merkel: Euro crisis worst since WW11
UK set for a decade of deleveraging
US stocks dented by Europe worries
Industry declines in the Eurozone while Portugal falls even deeper into recession
Insurers see disaster costs mount in 2011

OH GOD OH GOD MAKE IT STOP PLEASE MAKE IT STOP.

Future historians take note: the decline and fall of our civilisation was chronicled here.

Tell Me Why by D/Wolves

We first told you about San Diego’s D/Wolves, fronted by Joel ‘Kynan’ Williams, back in March. They’ve just released an excellent new EP via their Bandcamp page, entitled Stop Pretending. Taken from that is the future alt-pop classic below. This is a band with talent and confidence to burn, expertly honing their songwriting skills with every release. Hopefully they’ll be gracing these shores in the not too distant future.
