It Gets Better, Now in Book Form! Plus David Cameron says 'It Gets Better,' too. On tape.

I’m going to go ahead and assume everyone reading this is already quite familiar with our agony uncle Dan Savage’s It Gets Better campaign. Inarguably one of the only bright spots in the dickhole of a year that was 2010, the video series featured a beyond-impressive roster of contributors from every side of the cultural, political, religious, and sexually-oriented spectrum.
Delivering a simple message to all those feeling different and distraught at fragile times in their lives, it was one of those happenings that made you proud to be a human — a rarer and rarer occurrence these days. (Obviously it didn’t entirely eviscerate the pessimistic scourge that has so firmly latched itself to my sad brain, but it helped a bit!)
It Gets Better has been especially great for two reasons:
If you know a young person (or an old person — life, you know) who seems to be going through an especially tricky time, it feels good to be able to send him an encouraging, sympathetic word of advice from someone his own age, or who may well be his hero, like… David Cameron?
Conversely, if you have a relative or asshole friend who happens to be a bigoted shit, it feels great to challenge his horrible beliefs, and let him know that his dumbness is contributing to an atmosphere of depression and sadness for many. And also to let him know that the leaders of the free world disagree with him.
With the success of the campaign, and the good it has done in spreading the word against intolerance while raising money to do the same, Savage is packaging 100+ stories (out of nearly 10,000 that were recorded — wow) into book form, and releasing it on March 22nd! So now, if that bigoted, hateful relative was too hateful to figure out how to open a YouTube, you can cram your message of positivity down his throat in easy to digest, old-timey printed format.
Savage is contributing all of his earnings from the book in support of LGBT youth and the authors in the book who have contributed their work for free.
And catch up on Savage Love while you’re at it.
