Kurt Vile - Wakin on a Pretty Day
Slacker minus the hair lacquer, Kurt Vile, is set to release a 69-minute double album Wakin on a Pretty Daze on April 9, via Matador. Best way to build anticipation for said release? Put out a near 10-minute long single with an almost identical title and make it available as a free download, of course.

How to Dress Well - & It Was U (Elite Gymnastics remix)
How to Dress Well, aka Janet Jackson … sorry, Tom Krell, returns to the UK in May, including a date at Field Day festival in London on the 25th. Here, producer James Brooks, trading under the moniker Elite Gymnastics, makes all Krell’s (and our) 90s pop R&B fantasises come true with a smooth, fun remix of recent single & It Was U. Listen to Krell’s cover of Jackson’s Again, here.

Plantagenet 3 - The Darkening Green
Despite choosing a name that makes them sound like an ear-splitting techno ensemble well appreciated on the Brixton squat rave circuit, boy/girl duo Plantagenet 3 actually make gentle and minimal, not-quite-post-rock type instrumental music, bringing to mind Spaghetti Westerns and Joe Meek, with added drum machine. Today’s MPfree is their first release since 2011’s Modern Myths and Fairy Tales album.

The Fiery Piano - Scene from a Science Fictional Love Story
Stockholm native Gustaf Montelius, aka The Fiery Piano, releases his debut album this Wednesday (January 23), via his own Mega Mountain Records. Second Space follows not exactly hot on the heels of 2011’s Sirens EP.
Today’s MPfree is a pure blast of summery Scandi indie-pop, complete with gentle strings, a quivering, transatlantic vocal and a chorus that stealthily attacks your cerebellum, and then sticks around like an adorable, needy puppy.

Matthew E. White - Big Love
This single, taken from the hirsute Virginian’s forthcoming debut album Big Inner, arrives like a big, cuddly space-jazz hug. It sounds surprisingly fresh considering the obvious nod to the warm, hypnotic funk and soul of a late 60s and 70s golden era, like a cool rare vinyl handed down from father to son that’s managed to lose none of its original charm and still gets the youngsters dancing.
Big Inner is out January 21 through Domino and you can catch Matthew E. White live at The Lexington, January 23.

MPFree: Music Finland @ Eurosonic 2013
Music Finland has released a mixtape in advance of this weekend’s Eurosonic Nooderslag 2013, featuring those Finnish acts performing at the festival in Groningen, Netherlands. Amongst the tracks is a free download from the much touted Phantom (pictured).
We’re outrageously jealous of those able to attend this year’s Eurosonic, but this mixtape has soothed the pain somewhat, so thank you Music Finland.

GHXST - Doomgirl
And so the fetish for 90s fuzz-revivalism continues unabated – the latest to fall onto artfully distressed, denim-clad knees before the altar of plaid are New York trio GHXST (Shelley X, Chris Wild, Nathan La Guerra). They released their debut single via Club.The.Mammoth earlier in the year; the b-side (today’s MPFree) – available as a free download via their Bandcamp – possesses enough swagger to potentially set them apart from their similarly retro peers. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to do a little Billy Idol sneer whilst imagining yourself in a pair of leather keks you once saw on a Scandinavian male model.

Þerney (One Thing) by Pascal Pinon
Twosomeness, the second album from Icelandic twin sisters Jófrídur and Ásthildur, looks set to be one of the first big releases of 2013 – look out for a full interview in the coming days. In the meantime, sink into today’s Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi) produced MPFree – pronounced ‘therney’ – and let your imagination run wild in magical, snow covered landscapes.

Tame Impala vs Memory Tapes
New Jersey-based Dayve Hawk aka dreamcore merchant Memory Tapes has dusted this Tame Impala track with his usual sleepy nighttime magic, this time including a mid-song firework display of skronky guitar and amusingly epic rave synths. Nice. Tame Impala’s much admired new album “Lonerism” is out now.

MPFree: Tawazula by Lumerians
Full marks to Lumerians for really hamming up the psych/space-rock vibes on this cut from their new Horizon Structures EP. Musically the San Franciscans make Tame Impala sound like teetotal Mormons from Tunbridge Wells; the cover artwork (above) is reminiscent of those spray-painted galactic scene canvasses you can purchase on the street in cheap Greek beach resorts – which is a good thing.
Lumerians play The Waiting Room, N16, this coming Wednesday (Nov 28).
