Here’s a taster from Animal Collective’s forthcoming new album. It’s promisingly upbeat, broken-down psych-pop. Cool.

Sandra Kolstad - The Well
We’re pretty picky pop-pickers here at Snipe, but we’re suckers for a big heart, a big voice, and a big tune. Norway’s Sandra Kolstad synthesises this holy trinity to perfection on her new song “The Well”, streaming below. In a landscape crowded with electro-girls, Kolstad stands tall – her music teems with positivity, energy and spirit. Within the legions of new artists claiming Björk and Kate Bush influences, only one or two actually seem to carry that joyful, creative seed in their music, and Sandra Kolstad is one of them.
Watch out for a new album in 2012.

New WHY? album edges closer
Perennially awesome lit-hop three-piece WHY? have announced a new album, called “Mumps, etc.”, to be released on October 8th. The cover shows an elfin woman in the process of being eaten by a paper whale, and it was photographed live on a set rather than photoshopped – see the video proof below. WHY? play live at the Electric Ballroom on October 10th (and I’ll be banging on about their every move on this blog like the brazen devotee I am).

Blanck Mass - White Math
Blanck Mass made one of the albums of the year with his self-titled 2011 debut, constructed from masses of verdant nature sounds piled together in a vast , celestial ambient sound. The follow up is an AA side 12” single, to be released in October on the Software label. 21-minute epic “White Math” sees Power introducing beats to his lush soundscapes, but beneath the persistent synth line and skittering processed drum sounds there’a warm, pulsing drone that keeps the trancelike quality of Power’s output intact.

See this tonight: Parakeet
London trio Parakeet (comprising members of Yuck and The History of Apple Pie) put their US alt-rock credentials to the test with this, a cover of a 1986 Hüsker Dü classic. While we wouldn’t go so far as to say it surpasses the machine-gun rush of the original – for fear of a lynching – the mournful pace and restrained guitar work certainly take the listener on something of an alternative journey. Parakeet play White Heat tonight (July 24).

Tom Milsom - Home
Blue-haired indie sprite Tom Milsom is quite the internet renaissance man. A trained pianist who’s gathered an enthusiastic online following (numbering over 95k on his YouTube channel alone), he has a dedicated and homegrown audience that’s watched him grow-up-in-public as a songwriter and musician over the last few years. Milsom’s latest output is arguably his strongest. “Home”, from the forthcoming “Alien Home” mixtape, streams below; a piano-led introspective pop song that perhaps sits somewhere between The Postal Service and Patrick Wolf.
Also, see what Milsom can do sat in front of a church organ below, playing “Indigo” on his recent US tour.

Dan Deacon - True Thrush
Baltimore electronica wacko Dan Deacon has announced a new album, “America” , out via Domino on August 27th. “True Thrush”, streaming below, is a taster of what’s to come; by Dan’s standards, it’s positively laid back, but by most people’s standards that still makes it a spaced-out hyperspeed alt-pop sugar rush to get your heart beating a dizzy arrhythmia.

Wild Nothing - Shadows
Hazy US indie-pop merchants Wild Nothing are back with a new record this year. The new single “Shadow”, streaming below, is a suitably slight and dreamy taster, with the beautifully artworked, multi-cover album “Nocturne” following on August 28th, via the eternally ace Bella Union label. They play the Forum on November 1st.
