Snipe Likes: Memory Tapes

One of the better things to come out of the recent swathe of reverb-ridden bedroom pop bands known to internet indie-kids alternately as “glo-fi” or “chillwave” is the resurgence of nice looking video clips. Stock nature footage is overlaid with educational tape stuff or crackly video of the night sky; the colours are either bleached out like old camera film or have the contrast blasted up to a lurid eleven. Everything double-exposed or rolling lazily or spinning with retro effects. This is a double-exposed gem of a video for the hyped-but-good Memory Tapes. Lovely stuff.

Daily MPfree: Perfume Genius

Emerging indie scene darling Perfume Genius has just released his debut album, ‘Learning’. It’s a dark, intimate, brilliant record and “Look Out Look Out” is one of the standout tracks. We’ll be interviewing Perfume Genius at his debut UK show at Hoxton Hall next month: watch this space.

Daily MPfree: Hammock

Long-running partnership Hammock‘s first gig was played at the request of Sigur Ros frontman Jonsí at the launch of his Riceboy Sleeps project, which might give you some idea of what to expect. But Hammock go much farther than many bands in the ambient / post-rock sphere, crafting truly beautiful, gentle, evocative pieces that linger in the memory.

Daily MPfree: Meursault

Impassioned, Epic, lo-fi indie from the Scottish collective’s recent album, “All Creatures Will Make Merry”.

Daily MPfree: Liam The Younger

Liam The Younger is a bit of mystery. A Google search yields scant results; he’s on a small American Label, Underwater Peoples. No biog, obvs. But a link to two free albums here. Unusual for a musician not to hang the proverbial “it” all out on the internet for all to find.

This song was on an excellent Delicious Scopitone compilation earlier this year, and I’ve been pretty fearsomely obsessed with it since first listen. It sounds real. Fuzzy, Sad. Longing. And then it bursts into flames for an incredible outro that has me grinning like an idiot every time I listen. Check it out.

Daily MPfree: Trash Kit

‘Cadets’ is a perfect piece of messy, scribbly art-pop fun from all girl trio Trash Kit, who’s debut album was released recently on the unimpeachably brilliant Upset The Rhythm.

Preview: Hudson Mohawke

Incongruity is oh-so pleasing in music. That ‘what the…?!’ feeling when expectations and reality hit the fan just can’t be beat. Someone who’s made his name doing just that is Hudson Mohawke. This is the kid who became the youngest ever UK DMC finalist at 15; the tall, shy Glaswegian who’s breathed fresh life into R&B with his remixes of Tweet and Jodeci; and the Warp Records’ signing who’s funk-riddled, glitchy sound has spawned a dozen new genre nicknames. Having released his phenomenal debut album ‘Butter’ last year, tonight he’ll be helping Hyperdub hero Kode 9 celebrate his DJ Kicks launch along with Lucky Me comrade Rustie and rising star Paul White. Should be a scorcher.

Daily MPfree: Chrome Hoof

Daily MPfree: Chrome Hoof – Crystalline by snipelondon

A truly bizarre band, Chrome Hoof are a retro-futurist sci-fi blaxploitation jazz/krautrock/noise arkestra. I’d add “unlike any other” but, well, there just aren’t any others. See if they inspire the kind of devotion in you that they do from their cult of adoring fans.

Tonight: Stairs To Korea, Pagan Wanderer Lu, A Scholar & A Physician

Snipe’s music editor John Rogers will be DJing tonight at a free release party at The Old Blue Last in Hoxton. Playing live are oddball producer duo A Scholar & A Physician, London’s own Anglo-Icelandic pop maestro Stairs To Korea, and finally twisted indie-pop veteran Pagan Wanderer Lu, who’ll play his new album in it’s entirety with a specially assembled band.

Declare your attendance here.

The gig will start directly after the Brazil-North Korea World Cup football game, which is playing downstairs, making the set times as follows:

23.00 Pagan Wanderer Lu
22.15 Stairs To Korea
21.30 A Scholar & A Physician

Daily MPfree: Thomas Truax

Delightfully weird pop music from veteran oddball Thomas Truax. Like Tom Waits presenting kids TV.
