Most people support student demo, says poll

While most media are concerned with the ‘tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of damage to Tory headquarters, few have worried over the tens of thousands of pounds that have, as a result of the forthcoming changes to higher education, been billed to every single young person who wishes to attend college or university from 2012.

So it’s not surprising that the YouGov poll for the Sunday Times [We’d link – but the Times makes WAY more money by denying access, they think] yesterday shows that 65% of those polled support the students. Although a mere 13% support violent action. Still: 13% say yes to violent damage over tuition.

X Factor contestants as annoying as Katie Waissel

Ok, so she’s only being kept in because she’s a talking point (and this Top 5 is just playing in to the hype). And she actually did pretty decently in this week’s sing off (see how she even manages to be annoying when she does something well). But Katie Waissel remains intensely irritating, which makes her the latest in a well-stocked hall of shame. Here are five blasts from the X Factor past who were just as bad. Well, almost.

Danyl Johnson

The Katie Waissel of 2009. Same cockiness, same affectations, same calculated displays of mock vulnerability. Same gerrymandering by the judges to keep him in and prolong the pantomime villainy. Boooo.

Diana Vickers

More similarities to Waissel, notably the irksome prediliction for performing in bare feet because it’s somehow more “real” than singing in shoes, and the “poor little me” girlish simpering whenever the chips are down. Also, when you listen to this, it sounds like nothing so much as the screams of a mating fox. Horrid.

Daniel Evans

It’s not so much Daniel himself who was annoying as the producers who played on the death of his wife with remorseless cynicism. Here is the mawkish nadir, a death-themed sing off which reduced some of the more impressionable judges to tears, and condemned Scott Bruton, an infintely better singer, to elimination. The whole saga was a dark triumph of sentimentality over reason, which historians will doubtless draw on in the future to illustrate the fuzzy thinking which blighted public discourse in early 21st century Britain.

Same Difference

If the prissy, earnest, PG13 faces they put on in the first 10 seconds of this disgusting simperfest don’t make you vomit then Snipe doesn’t know what will.

G4

This video is rubbish quality, but that’s probably for the best. The fad for classicalising pop music needs to stop, it demeans both genres. They’re massacring a big part of Snipe’s adolescence here. The release of Hit Me Baby One More Time was a formative moment in our development into manhood. It should under no circumstances be turned into this.

Beetling With Doodle Bugs

The Chris Beetles Gallery is staging a massive exhibition of drawings by the biggest names in illustration, from John Tenniel to Quentin Blake, Aubrey Beardsley to, personal hero, Ronald Searle. More than sixty artists are featured, Beetles has an extensive collection and the gallery is fairly large, covering two floors, so with any luck it won’t be one of those “a-scribble-the-great-artist-did-on-a-napkin bobbing in a sea of mediocre crap, but a reasonable selection from each. If ink were booze, I predict that place would be filled with the classiest of drunks, and I’d be stumbling into the street afterward, dripping black and singing about hatchmarks. Still might.

The Illustrators- The British Art of Illustration runs Nov 20-Jan 8, 2011 at the Chris Beetles Gallery, 8-10 Ryder Street. Catalogue can be viewed at chrisbeetles.com.

SVIIB & Active Child

Two Snipe favourites in one today: Active Child remixes School Of Seven Bells, adding his trademark harp twinkles, synth washes and power-ballad drum hits to the woozy original. Great stuff.

Hackney councillor for Stoke Newington hates Shoreditch hipsters in her local

Louisa Thomson, Hackney councillor for the ward of Stoke Newington-Central, is saddened by the state of one of her favourite pubs, the Scolt’s Head. Writing on Facebook, she cussed out the staff as ‘wankers’ and called the pub more Shoreditch hipster than a welcoming back street boozer. Considering the ward she represents, comments like that could be trouble at election time if hipsters actually voted.

Best of the week's Top 5s

This week Snipe came over all Jack Donaghy with a Salute to Fireworks (if you don’t get that super sharp reference to contemporary pop culture, then please buy and watch 30 Rock Season 1 immediately). We also moaned about the annoying things Londoners do on public transport, and tried to be constructive for a change by sharing some of the best film nights in pubs and religious buildings across the city. We also dipped into our overdraft to buy this poster. Cool?

The Kids are All Right

The Kids Are All Right is a film that, like its two main characters, gets stuck in its meandering second half. And although it seems a sincere and even genuine slice of family life at first, Cholodenko’s latest directorial effort stumbles into a disappointing conclusion.
