Snapshots

Sarah Robertson’s poems are more like very short stories, often coming across as fan fiction as she imagines hanging out with her favourite celebrities. There are also very beautiful word pictures, such as her description of her hometown in New Zealand, once an historical economic powerhouse providing electricity and jobs, now reduced to a subject of “smoky conversations in bars in other towns.” Or her realisation that the “long white cloud” next to gigantic Australia is actually as vast as its diaspora kiwis spread across the globe.  Robertson is a sweet person with tart tastes, and Snapshots is a pleasant enough to listen to while downing a bottle of white wine. But it felt like something more at home in her garden amongst friends.
