You see - somebody can make money publishing a free newspaper
After five years of publishing, free financial newspaper City AM has made a profit for the first time – £423,000 for the first six months of their financial year. That also makes it a first profit of any of the major free papers in London: Evening Standard, Shortlist/Stylist, and, most influential of all, Snipe.

Jonathan Franzen reads at Serpentine, glasses stolen off face, ransom note delivered, and helicopter scrambled
That Bond Street jewellery robbery had nothing on this. Jonathan Franzer was minding his own business at a Serpentine Gallery party for the launch the of his new novel Freedom last night when someone came up to him and—yoink—pulled off his glasses, dropped a ransom note for £100,000 and jumped into the water. A man has been arrested. Franzen is described by onlookers as “extremely disgruntled.”

New venue alert - The Victoria, Dalston
We’re always a lot happier announcing new venues rather than the latest Enterprise Inn closure. Today, Dalston, of course, gets another new venue, the Victoria.
In their own words: the Victoria is situated within 5 mins walk of Dalston Kingsland, Dalston Junction and Hackney Downs stations. 6 buses stop on the doorstep – 242 (24 hr), 277 (24 hr), 236, 30, 56 and 38 / N38.
Unbeknown to almost everyone, through a door at the side of the bar is a 150 capacity venue with a great stage.
If you’d like to come and check the space out with a view to putting on a live night, a club night, a tea dance, a bingo afternoon, a cabaret night or whatever, send us a message or email Spoon [email protected]

Squatters occupy police station, police call their lawyers
Squatters in Waltham forest have taken over the Leytonstone Police station, which has been closed and put up for sale by the Met.
“Waltham Forest Police have confirmed it has started a legal bid to evict the squatters, but a spokesman admitted it is not known how long the process will take,” says the Waltham Forest Guardian
A neighbour tells tells the paper, ““We don’t need all that round here. It’s bad enough with the drugs and the violence in Leytonstone.” No wonder the bill packed up and left.

Hackney council vows to love, cherish Hackney Wick
The artists and squatters of Hackey Wick had better start planning the move to the next cheap area as Hackney Council has finally decided on what to do with the charmingly desolate art grotto.
According to Dalston People “The plan includes improvements to the Hackney Wick London Overground station; a ‘hub’ around the station that could include restaurants, cafes and shops; better walking and cycling connections; and two new bridges to provide direct access to the Olympic Park.
The masterplan recognises the unique creative and cultural industries in the area, which is home to Hackney Wicked arts festival every summer.”
What this really means, of course, is gentrification. The only question is will Hackney Wick be the next London Fields or the next Noho.
