Warning: don't appear to sit in some else's seat in New Cross
(From the press release) British Transport police have released CCTV images of a man they want to identify and talk to in connection with the incident, which took place as the the 11:00pm Charing Cross to Dartford service approached the station on Tuesday, 7 July.
PC Clive Thomas, the investigating officer, said: “The victim boarded the train at Waterloo and was approached by another man, who accused him of sitting in his seat before moving away and standing near the doors.
“Ten minutes later the man returned and threatened the victim before kicking and punching him in the face.”

Cory Doctorow: people who claim to protect artists from pirates are the true scam artists
You know who peddles false hope to naive would-be artists? People who go around implying that but for all those internet pirates, there’d be full creative employment for all of us. That the reason artists earn so little is because our audiences can’t be trusted, that once we get this pesky internet thing solved, there’ll be jam tomorrow for everyone. If you want to damn someone for selling a bill of goods to creative people, go after the DRM vendors with their ridiculous claims about copy-proof files; go after the labels who say that wholesale lawsuits against fans on behalf of artists (where labels get to pocket the winnings) are good business; go after the studios who are suing to make it impossible for anyone to put independent video on the internet without a giant corporate legal budget. — Cory Doctorow

The Intelligence
With Rogers away having all the jollies in Iceland, I’ll be your host for the Daily MPFree, delivering something new every day to whet the appetite and fondle the naughty parts, much like what is happening in this picture:

The Intelligence are a Seattle-based fuzz-pop act who are, by modern standards, total over-achievers. Led by (and indeed before this record, consisting solely of) Lars Finberg, they’ve spent most of the last decade flying under the radar thanks to the prominence of side-projects (Finberg started out as the drummer for Sub Pop’s A Frames) and related acts (Thee Oh Sees/most of the In The Red roster). With new record ‘Males’ (their sixth in so many years, thundering past willing ears in a shade over 25 minutes) Finberg has constructed a gang who share his love of spiky garage-rock riffs, of which today’s track is the spikiest.

London Film Festival iApp review
The London Film Festival’s new iOS app is a must-own for film goers. Except for one glaring omission, the LFF app is a best of breed programme.
- Easy to scroll through schedule ✔
- Easy to find film summaries ✔
- Video trailers ✔
- Displays closest screening ✔
- Display next screening ✔
- Live updates ✔
And the glaring omission?
- Book tickets ✖
It’s odd that you can’t book tickets through the app, as the LFF sells, in this fantastic world of the future, tickets through its website. The app doesn’t even link to the website but instead lists the festival phone number. Who would ever use their iPhone for a phone call?

Every nerdy Liz Lemon flashback from 30 Rock* (*May not include every flashback)
30 Rock isn’t even a hit show in the US, much less the UK, where it gets relegated to the backwaters of the Comedy Network or—shudder—Channel Five. That doesn’t mean that we can’t love this montage of nerdy Liz Lemon flashbacks.

Dalston's Arcola Theatre forced out by luxury flats
Dalston’s Arcola Theatre is moving because the landlord wants to convert the building to high-end flats. Artistic director Mehmet Ergen told the Stage “We were trying to negotiate to stay at the Arcola Street premises, but the landlords are moving very fast with wanting to put flats on top, so they gave us our notice and we need to leave by this Christmas. We’re creating a new space, we’re not just using it as it is. We’re taking the floor out to make a much higher ceiling and a much-improved main space. It will be a big step up for the Arcola.”
Arcola plans to move up the street to the Hackney council-owned Colourworks building. But it won’t be cheap – the theatre needs £150,000 for the move.

News from the Dominions: Canada's new governor-general gets a geeky coat of arms
Canada’s new governor-general, David Johnston, appointed just last week by Madge has a nerdy new Coat of Arms to go with the job – across the bottom is a wavy band of binary, representing “a flow of information, digital communication and modern media.”
