That LibDem rally? Better do the maths first
PolitcoStatics site Five Thirty Eight has taken their patented what do the polls actually mean method to the current Liberal Democrat surge, and it’s not pretty.
If the bounce simply manifests in a massive burst of support in seats that the Lib Dems already hold, along with a few nearby marginals, the end result could be a pickup of a modest 10 to 20 seats. Similarly, if it comes from alienated opposition voters in safe Labour or Tory seats (tactical/protest voters who would not vote Lib Dem over their own party), again the Lib Dem share of MPs will not budge very much.

Billy Bragg takes on local BNP leader Richard Barnbrook in Barking [Video]
Billy Bragg spent last Saturday delivering newspapers for Hope Not Hate in Barking, his hometown. Hope Not Hate was formed as an ‘antidote’ to the growing support of the BNP in the area.
Serendipitously, Bragg ran into Greater London Councillor Richard Barnbrook who was campaigning for the BNP. What fun.

Video of the new iPhone is 'probably real' [Video]
Gizmodo bought what looked like an iPhone 4 prototype over the weekend from someone who said that they found it on the floor of a dance club. Many assumed what was purchased was a well-done knockoff.
Now, John Gruber of Daring Fireball says that, in his opinion, it’s real. For reliability in things Apple, Snipe will go with Gruber.
Some features:
Camera on both sides (for video chatting)
Camera flash
Ceramic backing, rather than metal, which allows the mobile signal to better to fry your brains.

Art in the belfry
Interesting, imaginative use of space at the church of St John on Bethnal Green. The belfry of the grade 1 listed building is hosting an art installation by Stephen Lee. It’s a super-soothing, elegant marriage of contemporary art and 19th century architecture – the belfry is up a spiral staircase and feels worlds away from the Bethnal Green tube station bustle just a few metres below. Ten minutes up there should pour a drop of peace into even the most dislocated, atheistic soul.

Screwing the poor of Senegal - a DIY guide
From Private Eye
Thanks to British government-sponsored tax avoidance, Britain’s development fund CDC, formerly the Commonwealth Development Corporation, is helping shaft the people of Senegal (annual income: £1,000 per capita) on exploitative mining contracts by siphoning profits to a tax haven.
It’s a neat trick…
The company extracts gold from the inland Sabodala region and ilmenite and zircon –minerals used to make paints and abrasives – on the Grand Cote north of capital Dakar. But while it extracts the country’s resources, it doesn’t record any profits in Senegal, where they would be taxed at 30 percent. Instead, these are diverted to the island of Mauritius in the Indian ocean which has a tax rate nearer, um, 0 percent with some neat financial engineering.
