Austra - The Beat & The Pulse (Vondelpark Remix)

We’re in danger of developing a substantial musical crush on Toronto’s Austra here at Snipe. This summery take on recent single Beat And The Pulse by Surrey producer Vondelpark twists the dramatic electro of the original into something all the more Lemon Jelly-esque. Best heard whilst horizontal.

Mae by Magic Mountain

Nice bit of blippy U.S. house this, from Harry Bornstein a.k.a. Magic Mountain (formerly Magick with a ‘k’). Information is pretty scarce – he’s based in New Mexico and signed to online magazine offshoot The Pop Manifesto. There should be an EP coming out soon according to Altered Zones.

Purity Ring - Lofticries

Back in January we introduced you to Purity Ring’s ‘Ungirthed’, a perky little electro-ballad doing the blog rounds. This coming Monday, April 18th, Transparent will release the track as a 7”, with a similarly ambitious slice of melodic synth-pop from the mysterious Canadian duo on the b-side. Stream ‘Lofticries’ below.

Austra - Lose It

Toronto’s Austra have managed the near impossible – inserting operatic vocals into an electro track without making it sound like a Macedonian Eurovision entry. Like Berlin-based Planningtorock, who worked with The Knife on last year’s fully fledged electro-opera “Tomorrow, In A Year”, they fuse the two elements together deftly into dark, dramatic variation on pop music. Recent single Lose It has been on the blogs for a while already, and can be downloaded for free from the band’s website. It’s taken from debut album Feel It Break, released May 17th on Paper Bag Records. As an aside, check out possibly the finest use of operatic vocals in a pop song ever – Klaus Nomi’s Lightnin’ Strikes, from 1982.

Butcher The Bar - Bobby

At first listen, one could be forgiven for thinking this was another piece of glorious, Scandinavian indie-pop – Kings Of Convenience perhaps? Joel Nicholson is in fact Manchester-based. His second album as Butcher The Bar, For Each A Future Tethered, is released on Morr Music, June 10th. Download a free track, Bobby, below.

Marissa Nadler - Baby I Will Leave You In The Morning

Boston ‘dream folk’ artist Marissa Nadler is back with a self-titled, fan-funded long player, released in the UK on June 13th. With it’s shimmering melancholia and multiple key changes, “Baby I Will Leave You In The Morning” promises much – expect great things from the album.

Trouble Books - Song for Reinier Lucassen's Sphinx

Here’s a new track from SNIPE favourites Trouble Books: a collaboration with their pal Mark McGuire. It’s a typical lush, humane piece. A full album is coming out soon.

California by EMA

Erika M. Anderson, formerly of Gowns, releases her debut album Past Life Martyred Saints this week. California, below, is one of the standout tracks, a half-sung, half-spoken stream of consciousness over a feedback-drenched, electro-folk wall of sound. Some pretty hard-hitting lyrics too. Head over to the website of Souterrain Transmissions to get a free download of album opener and debut single, The Grey Ship.
