House Of Balloons/Glass Table Girls by The Weeknd

The Weeknd have been causing much debate amongst broadsheet journos. Partly because of their music – ace, inventive, hybrid R‘n’B – but also because of their adoption by certain ‘super-cool’ webzines/blogs. Apparently this is yet more evidence of Pitchfork and the like jumping on unthreatening, ‘unremarkable’ urban music with a chillwave bent, at the expense of more authentic artists. Nonsense. From what I can gather, The Weeknd are vocalist Abel Tesfaye and producer Jeremy Rose, they’re from Toronto and their free mixtape, House Of Balloons, might just be the best album of the year so far. Go get it!

Love Song (Mascara Remix) by Husband

Chiara and Gianlorenzo, a.k.a. Husband, played their first gig together at London’s Corsica Studios early last year. Hailing from Bologna, they’re into cool stuff like vintage cars and volcanoes and make tense ‘dronetronica’, as The Guardian calls it. Robot Elephant are releasing a limited edition 12” of debut single Love Song/Slow Motion to tie in with Record Store Day, April 16th. The EP will be released as a download on May 16th, featuring remixes from Portland’s Soft Metals and Italo House DJ Wolther Goes Stranger. Download the Mascara remix of Love Song below.

The Fridge by John Stammers

Manchester folk-troubadour John Stammers released his eponymous debut album last Monday, via Wonderfulsound. His characteristically English style of storytelling has led to comparisons with 70s folk heavyweights Richard Thompson and Nick Drake, as well as support slots with the likes of Alfie and King Creosote. Stream The Fridge, below.

Stay + by Christian Aids

With a name like Christian AIDS I was expecting something a lot more hardcore and offensive to the ears from this Manchester band. Thankfully, debut single Stay + is a pleasantly dark cacophony of dubstep/chillwave/electronica influences. It kicks off a couple of times too. Stay + is released via Double Denim, May 7th.

Whale by Yellow Ostrich

Minimal drums and looped, almost percussive vocals seem to be the style de jour for many bands at the moment. For a master class in how it’s done, check out last month’s tUnE-yArDs MPFree. Yellow Ostrich hail from New York City. The trio (including Jan Natchez, formally of Beirut) have just released an updated version of recent album The Mistress. Download The Whale from their Bandcamp page now.

South Carolina by Tennis

Tennis have been getting music bloggers in a tizzy since early 2010; they’ve got a cute little back story as well – Denver couple jack it all in to go sailing up the eastern seaboard for eight months, document their experiences in song, come back, get a record deal… perhaps someone should do something similar along the Regent’s Canal? Songs about submerged shopping trolleys and floating turds don’t have quite the same romance unfortunately. Tennis release debut album Cape Dory May 16th, through Carmen San Diego.

Ice Cream (Featuring Matias Aguayo) by Battles

The artwork and ongoing billboard campaign for new Battles album Gloss Drop, out June 6th on Warp, has been causing quite a stir. Head over to Drowned In Sound for more details about the mysterious pink blob, pictured above. Of more interest, to this writer at least, is Ice Cream, the first release from said record. Featuring Matias Aguayo, it sees the New Yorkers exploring their quirkier, more playful side. Stream below.
