“Everything Fun” Banned From 2012 Olympics
Chuck Ansbacher | Friday 18 March, 2011 12:13
It’s beginning to look like a day spent at the 2012 Olympics will almost identically resemble a day spent on an airplane, except maybe with less legroom. Since tickets have officially gone on sale, Logoc went ahead and released their list of rules and regulations, including a list of banned items. The list is… extensive.
Food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, liquids in containers of greater than 100ml in size, umbrellas, horns, whistles, drums, rattles, musical instruments, or any other devices that in the opinion of Locog may disturb a session (including mobile telephones), flasks, Thermoses and in general any material that Locog may deem dangerous or that may cause damage or disruption to a session
Looks like that family of mice can keep nesting in my vuvuzela for another four years. And thank God for that. Noise makers are inconsiderate and loud, and all good sporting events should be quiet, peaceful and respectful. It’s a simple fact.
However, the other restrictions may border on overreach territory. Especially the mention of mobile phones. Logoc went on to stress that this will only be for events where quiet is necessary, like gymnastics and archery. And I’ll take them at their word. It’s an unfortunate fact that a full decade into the emergence of the commonplace mobile, people still haven’t learned to mute them when society deems it appropriate. But for the sake of the Games, I sincerely hope they’re only keeping the mobile ban to those certain events. Because wow, can you imagine if the Olympics happen in 2012 and nobody tweets about them. Will they have even happened?
Oh, it was the ban on food and water that disturbed you about that list? And you’re confused about it because even airplanes allow you to bring a picnic on board? Yeah that does seem like a bit of a power grab. Hard to explain!
